Back then, Papa would take me to the original Shirokiya at Ala Moana—long before it became Lucky Strike and all the old charm was gone.

We’d walk straight down to the lower level, leaving the upper level where it smelled like mochi and miso, and my eyes would light up at the Sanrio corner—Hello Kitty pens, pastel notebooks, magical kawaii treasures from Japan. 🐱💖

Papa always let me choose one thing (even though I secretly wanted ten), then we’d roam through aisles filled with delicate teacups, lucky charms, and little souvenirs that felt like stories waiting to be told.

Now it’s all different, but every time I see a little Japanese trinket or sip something sweet, I’m whisked back—to that quiet space, hand in Papa’s hand, wonder in my heart and a anrio gum in my pocket.
